Teach Children Happiness, and They Will Gain the Capacity for Gratitude

Happiness is the ability to perceive love. Only when we understand how to savor the many flavors of life—its sweets, sours, bitters, and spices—do we truly realize that gratitude is simply another word for love.

My child, do you feel happy?

Sometimes, I will fondly watch my daughter eating fruit and check in with her about how it tastes. Me: "Sweetheart, don't you feel so happy that we have such delicious fruit to eat?" My Daughter: "Yeah! Dad actually just asked me the exact same thing."

Sometimes, I will sit down for dinner with my child and check in with her if this is the kind of environment she loves. Me: "Sweetheart, don't you feel so happy that our family has always cooked our own meals and eaten together since you were little?" My Daughter: "I do. My classmates are always super jealous of my school lunches."

Sometimes, we will just chat together, and I'll check in on her recent life and how she's feeling. Me: "Sweetheart, don't you feel so happy that we always just let you be completely yourself?" My Daughter: "Yeah, I really do. I feel like I never have to worry about getting scolded if I don't do well on a test or things like that."

These are the most common conversations in our home. Yes, they are all about tiny things. None of them involve luxury or wealth, and not a single one is a gift that costs money. Yet, from time to time, I let my child know that happiness is actually just that simple. When you can feel the love woven into an ordinary life, you naturally become grateful for everything you already have, and you find true joy.

In our household, there are no rewards for test scores, no earning allowances for doing chores, and no point-system charts for good behavior. I tell my children that life is simply about doing what needs to be done and doing it well. It is for your own good, for the good of the family, so that we can all thrive together. Right now, we are very happy, because we live each day to the fullest.

Adults should avoid framing love as a conditional exchange—such as "you must perform a certain way to receive something." Love is an intrinsic capacity, not a material object. When love is rooted in a deep sense of happiness, it naturally overflows with gratitude and humility.

Thank you, my child, for giving me the certainty that what I am doing allows you to feel truly happy.
