This is a true cultivation of the "heart," a continuous practice of nurturing:
A gentler heart — to accept our children's occasional meltdowns and big emotions, choosing to offer a warm embrace before rushing to pass judgment.
A more egalitarian heart — to view our children as independent individuals, listening to them on an equal footing rather than suppressing them with adult authority.
A more respectful heart — to treat our children as souls who stand on equal ground with adults. "Respect a child just as you would respect an adult." This phrase sounds simple, yet it is a lesson we spend a lifetime mastering.
We often ask ourselves: why are there always so many arguments in the home?
In truth, peace between parent and child always traces its source back to the awareness of the adult.
When we are willing to first slow down our pace, let go of our obsession with control, and begin to actively embody gentleness and respect, something beautiful happens. Over time, you will discover that those little eyes, which have been watching you all along, are quietly mimicking your every move.
The gentleness you offer to the world, your child will learn; the respect you grant to others, your child will internalize.
Slowly, through day-after-day of mindful practice, we will ultimately find that long-awaited "peace" within each other's lives.
On this journey of parenting, let us walk forward gently together.
