Daily life is the best educational setting for infants and toddlers. True education lies in helping children thoroughly understand daily routines and inviting them to participate in household chores alongside adults.
This seems like a monumental question, as everyone's answer is bound to be different...
In my view, language, cognition, math, interpersonal relationships, sensory integration, writing, reading, and even art are all equally important because a child will need every single one of them upon entering elementary school. To prevent children from experiencing excessive frustration and giving up on learning later on, what can we do for them during their early years? Let’s consider what core capabilities a child actually needs when faced with such a vast array of learning subjects.
Reflecting on foundational theories of child development, the primary developmental tasks for infants and toddlers before the age of six are to move toward independent living, develop logical thinking, express themselves politely, and engage in self-willed learning. Daily life is the perfect playground for this practice.
Within the Montessori philosophy, special emphasis is placed on daily life as the starting point of education and the foundation for all other areas of learning. This is precisely why Practical Life Education is the very first module in Montessori teacher training courses. To highlight its significance and theoretical foundation, I would like to explore Practical Life Education through the lenses of human physiology, neurocognitive science, and psychosocial dynamics.

When it gets cold, figuring out what to do with one's coat is the best cognitive learning experience a child can have!
Adults introduce the mechanics of a movement by demonstrating it to the child. Giving the child a clear chance to see how a movement happens and flows before they begin practicing is far more attractive than simply handing them an object to figure out on their own.
For instance, when an adult demonstrates how pressing down with three fingers opens a clothespin, how a small handkerchief is placed into the opening, and how releasing the fingers causes the pin to clamp the handkerchief, this chain of cause-and-effect deeply fascinates a child. If the adult doesn't slow down to let the child see this, the child won't realize how interesting a clothespin can be, and will likely just fiddle with it a couple of times before tossing it aside.
Teachers intentionally isolate the difficulty (ensuring one activity has only one learning objective) to help infants and toddlers focus on foundational movement practices. This not only shows an understanding of early physiological motor development but also helps children accumulate successful experiences, thereby building self-confidence.
Once a child refines their movements through these materials, the next step is to apply these motor skills to accomplish various real-life tasks. Examples include hanging up socks with mom, taking on the job of hanging up rags in the classroom, clipping their completed artwork in the exhibition area, or hanging ornaments on the Christmas tree. Completing these tasks demonstrates more than just the child's independence; it also represents environmental adaptation and cognitive activity.
To illustrate with a concrete example of children participating in decorating a Christmas tree in the classroom: first, the children must judge the height of the tree, decide how many ornaments to hang, determine whether to use clips or strings, and figure out how to divide the labor. No matter what a child wants to do, they ultimately still need the physical ability to clip the ornament onto the tree. A child's motor competency displayed in such group activities often significantly impacts their peer relationships and self-confidence.
Dr. Maria Montessori clearly states in The Absorbent Mind, in the chapter "The Importance of Movement in General Development" (p. 180), that mental development comes about through the child's movements... movement helps mental development, and this development shows itself again in further movements and actions. ... Therefore, mind and movement are two parts of a single whole.
The physical fitness areas and practical life zones universally found in preschools provide children with concrete demonstrations of movement and practice activities. However, if our support for a child's motor development is strictly confined to a specific class period, it is not only a misconception of motor development but also deprives children of opportunities for cognitive, social, and linguistic practice.

Want a cup of tea? What utensils are needed to brew it (cognition)? What motor skills are required (motor coordination)? How do you invite a classmate to enjoy it with you (language and peer relations)? How long should the tea leaves steep to taste good (math)? How do you clean up to complete the task (grace, courtesy, and comprehensive logic)? Where do the items go back to (environmental adaptation and judgment)? These are concrete learning moments found only in real life—textbooks can't teach them!
The renowned neuroscientist Dr. Daisy Hung once mentioned a compelling example of self-willed versus mechanical practice in one of her lectures. A stroke patient in his fifties had a paralyzed right hand and could not move it. The doctor tied up his left hand and made him practice cutting steak with his right hand. Driven by the desire to eat the steak, after six months of relentless practice, his right hand was capable of cutting steak again.
Based on this research, Dr. Hung concluded that when practicing out of one's own self-will, the efficiency of neural connections in the brain is a thousand times higher than when someone else forces your hand to practice. In other words, a single neural connection formed through self-willed practice is virtually equivalent to the efficacy of being forced to practice a thousand times. This beautifully validates the importance of the "freedom of choice" advocated by Dr. Montessori.
From the standpoint of brain development, there are two crucial principles. The first is neuroplasticity, which sets brain cells apart from cells in other bodily organs—function alters structure. In other words, how we use our brains dictates how our neural synapses connect and develop.
The first six years of brain development see the fastest synaptic connections in a human lifetime. Whether environmental stimuli are appropriate is intimately linked to the structural and functional development of the brain. Therefore, providing children with appropriate purposeful work carries profound meaning for their development at this stage. Many adults believe that sheltering a child from household chores is an expression of love, or assume that because a child doesn't know how to do chores, they shouldn't be given the chance to practice. In reality, this creates an obstacle to the child's development.
The second principle is that any stimulus to the brain (whether intrinsic or extrinsic) must present a "Just Right Challenge" for the individual. When a child faces a challenge that is too difficult—such as expecting a three-year-old to do a five-year-old's work—it creates stress, and the child will naturally reject or dislike the task. Conversely, if a task is too simple, the brain grows bored, and negative behaviors begin to surface.
Adults who do not understand children often misinterpret these behaviors as disobedience, completely unaware that the root problem stems from an environment or demonstration prepared by the adult that does not match the child's development. If, after a demonstration, we invite a child to do the same task and they refuse, we should reflect on whether the work is too complex or too simple. Similarly, when we invite a child to help with chores and it results in a greater mess, the outcome is often because the adult failed to provide precise, step-by-step motor instruction.
The purpose of practical life exercises is precisely to provide segmented and precise practice for young children in motor control, physical coordination, and gross and fine motor movements. This training does not stem from the adult's will, but rather from the child’s own choice of work based on their capabilities and interests. Because of this design, the brain's receptivity is vastly greater than it is during forced, mechanical drills.
In a Montessori classroom, for young children to choose their work independently and remain focused, we as guides must create an environment tailored to their developmental stage. This encompasses materials that naturally entice children to work, an aesthetically pleasing environment, meticulously planned material layouts and decorations, and a Montessori teacher filled with love and care who provides appropriate assistance at the right moment. Such a prepared environment acts like silent air, summoning the child to choose autonomously, acquire willpower, move toward independence, and manifest the natural development of life.

A life adorned with floral arrangements is exceptionally good at regulating emotions. For a child, the task of arranging flowers requires a vast synthesis of capabilities—cognition, observation, sequencing, movement, measurement, and balance. It sparks incredibly complex neural network connections in the brain.
Infants and toddlers have a powerful inner urge to develop their senses and abilities. Through the practice of daily life activities, they experience a profound sense of achievement derived from personal independence, while simultaneously building foundations for other academic areas.
For instance, the two-finger and three-finger grips cultivated during practical life exercises, along with the left-to-right sequencing of handling materials, are directly preparing the child for the next stage of writing. When a child reaches the "explosion of writing" phase—where gross and fine motor coordination, hand-eye synchronization, and control are fully ripe—their ability manifests with astonishing speed. Furthermore, the habit of moving visually from left to right, established during practical life exercises, has a decisive impact on enhancing a child's future reading abilities. Thus, the specific order and rules a teacher follows during a demonstration are intended to establish foundational capacities, preparing the child for the skills required in the next developmental milestone.
Children are the ultimate custodians of culture. Every society evolves unique ways of living based on its historical background. For example, the utensils used in Chinese society differ vastly from those in the West. This cultural cognition does not require a formal curriculum; instead, it accumulates naturally through daily living. When practical life scenarios are embedded within the home, a child naturally absorbs Lunar New Year customs, social etiquette, and the proper use of chopsticks.
The home is the premier setting for socio-cultural education. When parents allow children to participate in chores, it becomes easy to observe the child's motor development and cognitive expression. Moreover, children who pitch in with housework are more likely to receive validation within the family. They transition from being purely cared for to actively participating in "caring for others" and "caring for the environment," which deeply satisfies them on a psychosocial level.
Dr. Montessori notes that if a child has not properly laid a table, used a brush to scrub, swept a carpet, or washed and dried cups and plates, they can never truly develop real competence. If their social life lacks a foundation built on appropriate education, they can never behave naturally and gracefully. ... Even if a person's technical skill reaches absolute perfection, if it is not integrated into life—thus lacking various motivations to strive upward, and failing to create a complementary relationship with other skills—then both physical training and knowledge can be considered entirely useless.

Cooking activities not only encompass foundational movements—such as gripping, scooping, pouring, clamping, sifting, pressing, brushing, and washing—but also carry high levels of cognitive and psychosocial meaning.
Whether in the classroom or at home, giving a child a "task" and teaching them how to complete it equips them with the exact capabilities they will need for elementary school. When a child possesses an intrinsic motivation to learn, the social intelligence to communicate and navigate their environment, and a profound sense of self-worth born from completing concrete tasks, their transition into elementary school will be as natural as a fish taking to water.
