Leaving home for an unfamiliar school environment can be a deeply frightening experience for a child. Caregivers must empathize with the child's emotions while being mentally prepared themselves. This preparation should begin early. Parents, please keep these four key points in mind:
1. Establish a Regular Routine
It is recommended that children be in bed by 9:00 PM to prepare for sleep. You can chat, tell stories, or listen to music together to gradually cultivate a regular lifestyle. Once a good routine is established, children will feel safe, comfortable, and stable, making the transition to school much easier.
2. Create a Positive Impression
Avoid using negative language that might cause the child to associate the center with fear or anxiety. Instead, frequently mention the fun and interesting aspects of the center during conversations to spark curiosity and build positive associations.
3. Leave Firmly When Necessary
If a parent softens and turns back—or even takes the child home—the moment they start crying, the child learns that crying is effective. This only worsens the situation in the future. Therefore, once you have said your goodbyes, it is crucial to remain consistent and leave firmly when necessary.
4. Remember to Say Goodbye
Before leaving, say a proper goodbye. Explain to your child why they are staying at the center and clearly communicate the reasons behind it. Let them know that you still love them and that you will be back to pick them up at a fixed time every day. If there is a special circumstance where you will be late, be sure to inform the child in advance. Day after day, consistent execution is the best and only way to help your child overcome their anxiety.
